Species Fungorum gives Inonotus obliquus (Fr.) Pilát as the current scientific name and places the species in the family Hymenochaetaceae.

The species lives as a wood-decaying and parasitic fungus on trees. It occurs mainly on birch species, although researchers have also documented Chaga conks on other host trees.

What makes Chaga unusual is that the structure people most often recognise as “Chaga” does not look like a classic cap-and-stem mushroom.

Instead, the fungus develops a dark, hard and irregular structure on the trunk. This structure is normally called a Chaga conk.

What is a Chaga conk?

A Chaga conk is the dark outgrowth that Inonotus obliquus can form on an infected tree.

Mycological literature often uses the term sterile conk. This means that the structure lacks the normal reproductive function of a mature fruiting body.

The conk can grow for many years and over time develops a very characteristic appearance. The inner tissue, on the other hand, often has browner or rust-coloured tones.

Important terminology: “Chaga conk” describes the raw material more accurately than “Chaga fruiting body” when referring to the well-known black structure from the tree.

Is the Chaga conk a fruiting body?

No, not in the usual mycological sense.

A classic mushroom fruiting body acts as a reproductive structure in which the fungus produces and spreads spores. Researchers have, for example, examined conks from silver birch, Betula pendula, and downy birch, Betula pubescens.

At the same time, Chaga can also occur on other deciduous trees. The researchers observed differences in betulinic acid and certain polyphenolic components between samples from birch and alder, among other things.

This means that host tree and geographical origin can contribute relevant information to the raw material documentation.

The outside and inside of a Chaga conk are not identical

A mature Chaga conk has a clearly layered appearance.

The surface is usually dark, hard and cracked. They found differences in the triterpenoid profile, including compounds such as inotodiol, betulin, betulinic acid and trametenolic acid.

That is why even where in the conk a sample is taken can affect the analytical result.

Inotodiol – a characteristic Chaga marker

Inotodiol is a lanostane-type triterpenoid that researchers often identify in Inonotus obliquus.

Several chemical studies of Chaga return to this compound. Inotodiol therefore works as a relevant raw material marker in analytical characterisation.

Studies of Chaga from different geographical areas also show that the amount of inotodiol can vary between samples. Researchers have, for example, compared Chaga from France, Ukraine and Canada and measured different concentrations of inotodiol, betulin and betulinic acid.

This illustrates an important principle: the species name alone does not guarantee an identical chemical profile in every batch of raw material.

An analytical marker is not the same as a measure of effect. Inotodiol can describe parts of the raw material’s chemical profile, but a specified inotodiol value does not in itself say anything about medical or physiological effect.

Betulin and betulinic acid in Chaga

Betulin and betulinic acid are two other compounds that often appear in analyses of Chaga.

Birch bark naturally contains large amounts of betulin. Because Inonotus obliquus often develops on birch, researchers have long studied the relationship between the host tree and these triterpenoids in Chaga material.

Chemical studies have shown both betulin and betulinic acid in Chaga conks. At the same time, the levels vary depending on, among other things, the origin of the sample and the host tree.

A documented analytical value for a specific raw material therefore gives more information than the assumption that all Chaga has the same triterpenoid profile.

Beta-glucans in Chaga conk

Chaga also contains glucans and other polysaccharides.

Beta-glucans act as structural components of fungal tissue. Laboratories can therefore analyse the beta-glucan content as part of the chemical characterisation of the raw material.

It is, however, important to distinguish between beta-glucans and the broader term polysaccharides. A high total value for polysaccharides does not automatically mean the same thing as a specific beta-glucan value.

In addition, the beta-glucan content should not be used as a universal measure of strength between different mushroom species.

If you would like to read more about how such analyses work, see our guide on
beta-glucans in mushroom extracts.

Chaga conk vs Chaga mycelium – not the same raw material

Like other fungi, Inonotus obliquus also forms mycelium.
