What is a standardized extract? A standardized extract is a raw material for which the producer has defined specifications for one or more analytical parameters and controls each production batch against these requirements. Standardization is therefore about documented control and reproducibility – not just about how concentrated an extract is.

What is a standardized extract?

A standardized extract is a raw material where the producer has selected one or more measurable quality parameters and established the levels or ranges they should fall within.

The producer then analyzes each production batch and compares the results against the specification. This way, it can be verified that the batch remains within the defined requirements.

In short: standardization means that the producer measures and controls defined properties from batch to batch.

How does standardization work?

The process begins with the producer defining which properties are relevant for the raw material. This could include, for example, chemical analytical markers, identity, or other quality parameters.

The laboratory then analyzes a sample from the current batch. The result is subsequently compared against the producer’s established specification.

If the analytical values are within the specified limits, the batch meets the current standardization. However, this does not mean that every batch is chemically identical.

Botanical raw materials come from biological sources and can therefore naturally vary. Standardization is instead used to keep selected parameters within defined limits.

Ratio and standardization are not the same thing

A common misconception is that a high extraction ratio automatically implies a higher or better standardization. This is not how it works.

A ratio such as 100:1 describes the relationship between the amount of plant material and the finished extract quantity according to the producer’s specification. However, it does not automatically state how much of a certain chemical marker the extract contains.

What are analytical markers?

Analytical markers are chemical components that laboratories can identify and measure. Producers can use them to describe parts of a botanical raw material’s chemical profile.

Which markers are used depends on the raw material and product specification. For some Tongkat Ali extracts, for example, eurycomanone is used as one of several analytical parameters.

However, it is important not to equate a higher content of a single marker with higher general quality. The assessment should also consider raw material identity, origin, process, and other documentation.

Why can standardized batches still differ?

Botanical material naturally varies. The plant’s origin, harvesting conditions, raw material composition, and manufacturing process can affect the final profile.

Therefore, standardization does not mean that every batch must have exactly the same analytical value. Instead, the results should fall within the producer’s established specifications.

For example, an extract may have a specification for a certain range. Two batches can then show different results but still both meet the same standardization.

Standardization = controlled range, not identical numbers.

What role does a COA play?

A Certificate of Analysis, COA, shows analytical data for a specific production batch. The document may include batch number, specifications, analytical results, and analytical methods, among other things.

For a standardized raw material, a COA therefore becomes a practical way to check how the current batch relates to the established specifications.

It is particularly important that the batch number in the document corresponds to the product being examined. Otherwise, the analytical results may belong to a different production run.

Example of standardization: Physta®

Physta® is a standardized water extract from the root of Eurycoma longifolia. The manufacturer uses several defined analytical parameters to control the production batches.

Among the parameters are eurycomanone, glycosaponins, polysaccharides, and total protein fraction. Thus, the standardization is based on multiple measured values and not solely on a single chemical marker.

What should be checked in a standardized extract?

The term ‘standardized’ becomes most useful when the producer also discloses what the standardization actually covers.

  • Which botanical species is used?
  • Which plant part is used as raw material?
  • Which analytical parameters are included?
  • Which specifications apply?
  • Which analytical method is used?
  • Is there a batch-specific COA?
  • Does the document’s batch number match the current product?

Overall, this information provides a significantly clearer picture than merely reading the word “standardized” on a product label.

Frequently asked questions about standardized extracts

Does standardized mean all batches are identical?

No. Botanical raw materials can naturally vary. Standardization means that defined parameters must fall within established specifications.

Is a standardized extract the same as a concentrated extract?

Not necessarily. Concentration and standardization describe different properties. A ratio can describe the quantitative relationship in the extraction process, while standardization describes controlled analytical parameters.

Is 100:1 automatically stronger than a standardized extract?

No. A ratio does not automatically say anything about the content of a specific analytical marker or the extent of documentation. Therefore, such a comparison cannot be made solely based on the ratio figure.

Can an extract be standardized against multiple parameters?
